PROMOTING HEALTHIER RAMADAN TRADITIONS THROUGH “KALORI KURANG, RAYA LEBIH RIANG” MOVEMENT

March 19, 2025 by StrawberrY Gal

As Malaysians come together to observe Ramadan, the emphasis on spiritual reflection is accompanied by cherished culinary traditions. However, with the abundance of rich and indulgent foods during iftar and sahur, there is a growing need for mindful eating habits that align with overall well-being. The “Kalori Kurang, Raya Lebih Riang” movement seeks to empower Malaysians with simple, effective ways to maintain a balanced diet while still enjoying their festive favourites.

With obesity rates on the rise globally and Malaysia ranking highest in Southeast Asia for overweight and obese adults, this initiative comes at a critical time where the need for accessible, practical solutions make healthier eating effortless—a long-term mission that Scott will be adopting beginning this fasting month.  A key focus of the movement is raising awareness about the small yet impactful changes individuals can make—such as reducing excess oil in food—to promote long-term health benefits without compromising taste or tradition.

Nor Syafiqah Zainal, a Clinical Dietitian at Avisena Women and Children’s Specialist Hospital points out that breaking fast with high-fat or greasy foods can lead to digestive issues. “Even though people tend to eat less frequently during Ramadan, weight gain can still occur due to the tempting array of delicious foods available at Ramadan bazaars or buka puasa gatherings like murtabak, kuih or bubur lambuk, all of which on average can total to around 700 calories. The body slows down its metabolism to conserve energy during fasting, making it easier to store excess calories as fat. However, that doesn’t mean one has to forgo traditional dishes. By making small tweaks—like cutting back on oil—Malaysians can preserve their culinary traditions while still prioritising their health. Just like any lifestyle change, it’s all about finding a balance rather than resorting to deprivation. Simple adjustments, such as using paper towels, can absorb up to six teaspoons of oil from a complete meal with multiple dishes.”

To bring this message directly to the community, the initiative has taken to Ramadan bazaars, partnering with local vendors to demonstrate practical ways of making traditional meals slightly healthier, “By partnering with bazaar vendors, we’re demonstrating a how a simple step of dabbing a Scott Calorie Absorb Towel on our local delights can remove more than 1 teaspoon of excess oil. Of course, everything in moderation, but the key here is how Scott is offering a practical solution to an existing lifestyle and eating habit,” shared Yap Li Vern, Marketing Manager of Scott.

Scott’s ‘Kalori Kurang, Raya Lebih Riang’ will take place across major Ramadan bazaars throughout the Klang Valley. At these bazaars, live cooking demonstrations showcase how simple steps, such as dabbing Scott’s 127 calorie-absorbent kitchen towel on crowd-favourites like keropok lekor, ayam goreng, and pisang goreng, could reduce excess oil intake without altering flavour or texture. The results? All the tantalising tastes and crunch Malaysians love, but with significantly fewer calories.

Beyond the live demonstrations, visitors were also treated to exciting booth activities, including the Spin the Wheel challenge, where they won exclusive Raya-themed Scott merchandise like tote bags, cookie jars, and money packets. Adding to the festivities, the Scott Kitchen Towel mascot made a special appearance, spreading cheer throughout the bazaar.

While Scott helps Malaysians enjoy healthier choices at bazaars, it is also the perfect companion for sahur and buka puasa preparations at home. With families cooking more during Ramadan, Scott kitchen towels offer a quick and efficient way to clean up spills, absorb excess oil, and keep kitchens neat and tidy throughout the fasting month.

Make sure to visit the next bazaar at Bazaar Ramadan Dato Keramat AU1 from 20th March to 22nd March 2025 to join in the fun! The campaign also extends into digital spaces, collaborating with over 10 content creators to develop and share healthy, fuss-free recipes throughout Ramadan.

As Ramadan remains a time for community, togetherness, and gratitude, this initiative serves as a reminder that small changes can lead to a meaningful impact, allowing everyone to celebrate with joy, balance, and well-being.

Note to Editor:

To further support the spirit of Ramadan and Raya, a nationwide campaign is being rolled out. As part of the Kimberly-Clark Nationwide Raya Promo, customers who spend a minimum of RM60 on participating products will receive an exclusive dessert plate, while those spending a minimum of RM20 will have the chance to enter a Gold Bar contest worth RM50,000.
