Kai Wo Bao, Bandar Menjalara – A Hidden Gem for Dim Sum and Porridge Lovers

March 24, 2025 by StrawberrY Gal

Tucked away in the vibrant neighborhood of Bandar Menjalara, Kepong, Kai Wo Bao is a haven for dim sum enthusiasts and lovers of traditional Cantonese breakfast fare. This modest eatery has been gaining popularity for its impressive selection of handcrafted dim sum and silky Cantonese-style porridge, offering diners an authentic taste of Hong Kong right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Among its many offerings, the restaurant’s signature Kai Wo Bao (鸡窝包) stands out as a must-try specialty, bringing a unique twist to the classic Loh Mai Kai.

Unlike the conventional Loh Mai Kai, where glutinous rice is served in a bowl, the Kai Wo Bao at this establishment takes it a step further by wrapping the fragrant rice in a soft, fluffy steamed bun. The result is a delightful balance of textures—the chewiness of the glutinous rice, the tenderness of marinated chicken, and the light, airy bite of the bun. Every bite bursts with the rich flavors of soy sauce, Chinese mushrooms, and lap cheong (Chinese sausage), creating a harmonious blend that is both comforting and satisfying. This dish alone makes the journey to Kai Wo Bao worthwhile, but there is much more to explore on the menu.

Stepping into the restaurant in the morning, diners are greeted by the sight of steaming baskets of dim sum being carefully arranged on carts, ready to be served fresh to eager customers.

Traditional favorites such as Har Gao (prawn dumplings) and Siew Mai (pork and shrimp dumplings) are made with a meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that each bite delivers a perfect balance of flavors. The Char Siew Bao, with its fluffy white exterior and sweet, smoky barbecue pork filling, is another crowd favorir,

For those seeking a lighter and more nourishing option, the Cantonese-style porridge at Kai Wo Bao is a comforting choice. Slow-cooked over low heat until it reaches a velvety smooth consistency, the porridge is both hearty and easy on the stomach. The century egg and lean meat porridge, a staple in many Chinese households, is a standout dish, offering a rich umami flavors,

Beyond its delicious food, Kai Wo Bao also offers a welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere. The restaurant’s cozy, unpretentious setting makes it a perfect place to gather for breakfast or brunch, whether it’s a casual outing with friends or a weekend dim sum session with family.
