Travel Ipoh : A visit to Ho Yan Hor Museum

September 24, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

The Ho Yan Hor Museum in Ipoh is a historical gem dedicated to the legacy of Dr. Ho Kai Cheong, the founder of Ho Yan Hor, a well-known herbal tea brand in Malaysia. Situated in a pre-war two-story heritage building on Jalan Bijeh Timah, this museum pays tribute to both Dr. Ho and the herbal tea that became a household name in Malaya. Dr. Ho was a pioneer in the industry, being the first in Malaya to package his herbal tea in dried form, making it more accessible and convenient for consumers.

Museum curator Ng Chern Yuan highlights the significance of this space in preserving and sharing Dr. Ho’s life and contributions. Sponsored and supported by Hovid Berhad, a pharmaceutical company founded by Dr. Ho’s eldest son, David Ho, the museum not only serves as a historical archive but also as a testament to how the family business evolved from a humble tea-making endeavor into a reputable pharmaceutical company. The museum itself occupies the very building where the herbal tea was first invented, offering visitors a glimpse into the origins of Ho Yan Hor.

A key objective of the museum is to educate the public, especially those who may associate the brand with foreign origins, about its strong local roots in Ipoh. Visitors to the museum can learn about the tea-making process, the family’s journey, and the history of the brand, all while being immersed in the rich cultural and historical tapestry of the region.

With free admission and the chance to enjoy a complimentary cup of herbal tea, the museum attracts approximately 100,000 visitors annually, both local and international, contributing to the promotion of Ipoh’s heritage and the legacy of Ho Yan Hor
