Golden Phoenix unfold the Wood Dragon with their pop-up restaurant

As the auspicious Year of the Wood Dragon unfolds, EQ’s legendary Chinese restaurant, Golden Phoenix, emerges as a beacon of opulence and celebration. The dragon, symbolizing luck and power, sets the stage for a pop-up dining experience that promises evolution, improvement, and abundance. Nestled within the prestigious EQ, Golden Phoenix pop-up takes its place as a culinary haven from January 29 to February 24, 2024, offering both lunch and dinner services.

With a rich history as one of Kuala Lumpur’s finest and most beloved Chinese restaurants, Golden Phoenix reclaims its throne each Lunar New Year as a pop-up sensation at the award-winning EQ. This year, the culinary journey on Level 1 transcends time, drawing from a treasure trove of recipes spanning five decades. The menu seamlessly blends cherished classics with innovative creations designed for the modern gourmet.

Set Menus for Prosperity

Golden Phoenix presents a symphony of seven celebratory menus, each a culinary masterpiece ranging from RM198+ to RM888+ per person. These meticulously crafted menus, steeped in tradition, invite patrons to embark on a gastronomic adventure. From cherished favorites to tantalizing new creations, the offerings promise an unforgettable journey through flavors.  And this time, we tried the Prosperous Atmosphere Set which is price at RM388+ per person.

Platinum soft-shell crab, white bait yee sang

Commence your festive feast with a symphony of flavors as you indulge in the Platinum Soft-Shell Crab and White Bait Yee Sang. This delectable creation sets the tone for a memorable and prosperous celebration, weaving together a tapestry of exquisite ingredients. The soft-shell crab brings a delightful crunchiness that harmonizes with the other elements, creating a perfect balance of textures. These tiny, flavorful fish add a burst of umami, enhancing the overall taste sensation. The white bait complements the soft-shell crab, creating a symphony of flavors that dance on the palate.

Double-boiled matsutake mushroom soup, fish maw, dried scallops, lily bulbs

Delight your senses with a bowl of indulgence as you savor the Double-Boiled Matsutake Mushroom Soup. The soup is simply an indulgence where wih the added matsutake mushroom, it brings you with the depth of umami and earthiness to the soup. What’s more is chef uses the double boiled techniques it makes the overall soup very nourishing and soul satisfying.

Braised sun-dried oyster, abalone, sea moss, flower mushroom, broccoli

Moving next, we had the awesome vegetables which is served. The serving comes with the Chinese New Year must have. This dish is a symphony of premium ingredients, each carefully selected to symbolize prosperity, wealth, and good fortune in the Chinese culinary tradition. The umami from the dried oysters, the richness of abalone, the texture of sea moss, the earthiness of flower mushrooms, and the crispness of broccoli create a delightful symphony on your palate.

Steamed tiger grouper, preserved radish, garlic, ginger, superior soy sauce

For fish, they are beautifully portioned up and the grouper is well-steamed. The fish brings you with the firm and succulent flesh. The steaming technique enhances the natural sweetness and tenderness of the fish, creating a melt-in-your-mouth experience with each bite.

Duo of prawns, glazed soy, and scallop mayonnaise coated, crispy potato

Indulge your senses in a symphony of flavors as you savor the exquisite Duo of Prawns, a culinary masterpiece that marries the succulence of prawns with the richness of scallops, complemented by the irresistible crunch of crispy potatoes. This dish is a harmonious dance of textures and tastes, carefully orchestrated to elevate your dining experience. These plump and juicy prawns are skillfully stir-fried to perfection, allowing the natural sweetness of the seafood to shine. Glazed with a luscious soy-based coating, each prawn becomes a delightful burst of flavor. Love every mouthful of it. 

Oven-roasted duck with sweet orange sauce, chestnuts

And we had the roasted duck which is another signature here. The duck is perfectly roasted bringing you with the crispy skin and the tender juicy meat. The duck comes simply flavourful and each bites is such an indulgence without any gammy taste on it. With the sweet orange sauce topped with it ; it makes the overall taste even better and the sweetness brings up the tatse

Golden Phoenix crispy e-fu noodles, chicken, seafood

Embark on a gastronomic adventure with noodles that transcend the ordinary. The Golden Phoenix E-Fu Mee features in-house crafted noodles that are not just homemade but elevated to perfection through the art of deep-frying. The result is a medley of textures—crispy on the outside, while maintaining a delightful chewiness within. The sinfully addictive savory sauce that envelops the golden strands of E-Fu noodles. The sauce is a symphony of flavors, boasting a perfect balance of savory notes that dance on your taste buds. Each bite is an invitation to savor the rich and tantalizing essence of the dish.

Rice cake and baked peony lotus seed paste & Chilled lemongrass jelly, passionfruit, dragon fruit

We end our meals with their delightful desserts where we are served with the rice cake and the baked peony lotus seed paste. Together with it; we enjoyed the refreshing soothing chilled lemongrass jelly that comes together with it.

The prosperity toss

Premium Australian Lobster Yee Sang

A must-have at every Lunar New Year is yee sang, the multicoloured, many textured salad which is said to represent the various aspects of life, from the sweet, salty, sour, astringent, and bitter. Golden Phoenix will offer six variants of this festive dish, ranging from Korean snow pear yee sang priced at RM108+ for four to six persons, and RM208+ for eight to ten persons, to the premium Australian lobster yee sang with fish roe priced at RM488+ for four to six persons, and RM888+ for eight to ten persons.

The Boston lobster yee sang with fish roe is RM338+ for four to six persons, and RM688+ for eight to ten persons. The Alaska crab, Hokkaido scallops yee sang for four to six persons is priced at RM228+, while the eight to ten persons serving is RM448+. The crispy white bait and soft-shell crab yee sang (RM168+ or RM328+) is perfect for those with a preference for extra crunch in their yee sang, while the classic smoked salmon, jelly fish yee sang is priced at RM128+ and RM248+ for four to six persons, and eight to ten persons respectively.

Ala carte selections

Premium Abalone Chinese Casserole

Tradition meets luxury in Golden Phoenix’s ala carte offerings, with an extravagant poon choy (casserole) dish being one of the stars of the season. Comprising ten-head abalone, Japanese dried scallops, tiger prawns, smoked duck, steamed chicken, sea moss, dried oysters, baby cabbage, mushrooms, white radish, gluten, oyster mushrooms, yam and money bags, this dish symbolises largesse or abundance. Priced at RM588+, each portion serves up to six persons.

Traditional Roast Duck

Duck, which is a firm favourite, is served two ways at Golden Phoenix, with the perfectly crisped skin served in crepes, and the balance of the meat prepared in one of three choices: sautéed with spring onions and ginger, wok-fried with assorted vegetables, or in fried rice or fried noodles. Each bird is priced at RM288+.

Among the long list of other tantalising New Year offerings are Golden Phoenix signature dishes including braised sun-dried oyster with ten-head abalone, sea moss, flower mushroom and broccoli (RM68+ per person), baked Boston lobster with dried scallops and shimeji (RM138 per 100 gram), braised tofu with turbot and mustard vegetable (RM48+ for the medium portion, RM96+ for the large), and the Golden Phoenix crispy e-fu noodles with seafood (RM93+, medium, RM188+, large).

An abundance of gifts

Gift-giving is an integral part of Chinese New Year tradition. The gifting and reciprocation of gifts is said to ensure that prosperity flows through families and communities. EQ espouses this tradition with a selection of stunning hampers created to impress.

Chinese New Year Hampers

The RM888 Prosperity Delight Hamper includes a bottle of Bottega Gold prosecco, 25 pineapple tarts, two variants of festive cookies, a pair each of birds’ nest and chicken essence, Chinese tea, flower tea and EQ’s special edition ang pow packets.

The Brilliant Fortune Box priced at RM588 contains eight pieces of pineapple tarts, golden butter cookies, Chinese tea, EQ premium sauce, mandarin candle and EQ’s special edition ang pow packets.

The Gorgeous Blossom Basket, RM328, features two different Chinese New Year cookies, two Chinese teas, EQ premium sauce, mandarin candle, and EQ ang pow packets.

There is also a variety of edible gifts, ranging from RM88 for either nine house-made baked peony lotus seed paste, six mini rice cakes, or a mix of six mini rice cakes and baked peony lotus seed paste.

Nine pieces of pear crisp pandan paste with chicken floss retail at RM128, while the extravagant set of Chinese zodiac pralines is priced at RM288. For RM238, a happy recipient will receive the Health Abundance Trio of premium sauces consisting of royal premium scallop sauce, sakura prawn ‘belacan’ sambal, and house-made kam heong sauce.
