Lazada Malaysia Brings Prawn Farmers Online This 7.7

July 6, 2020 by StrawberrY Gal

Malaysia’s leading eCommerce platform Lazada Malaysia is stepping up its efforts with a Prawn Farmers Initiative, and helping agriculture-based industries bounce back by bringing local prawn farmers online for the Lazada 7.7 Mid-Year Super Sale. For the first time, local prawns from Selangor State will be featured in a dedicated livestreaming session at midnight, July 7, offering fresh crustaceans directly from the sea to homes.

After receiving word that prawn farmers were unable to sell their daily catch, Lazada reached out to EARWYNN Prawn, a local prawn distributor that works directly with local prawn farmers to bring their export quality, antibiotic-free, and MyGAP certified Black Tiger prawns on the platform. In addition, Lazada worked to create special marketing promotions and a dedicated delivery service to kick start sales during the 7.7 campaign.

To support this, a special livestreaming session is scheduled at 00:00, July 7 on the Lazada app, featuring KOL Abang Brian, who will be showcasing his scrumptious shrimp-based recipes. Viewers will also be able to collect vouchers with discounts up to 50% off during the session.

“We have had over supply of prawns due to the COVID-19 global pandemic and this would have been a waste if we needed to dispose the harvest. Thankfully with this new initiative we are able to have greater reach to customers with export quality prawns delivered by GoGet.my” said Erik Ong, of EARWYNN Prawn.

“COVID-19 has caused a prolonged disruption to the local economy. We saw the struggles of small businesses within the agricultural industry, and have been continuously helping them by moving their business online. We remain committed to onboard and promote small local agricultural businesses like the Prawn Farmers on our platform. Lazada offers an efficient and direct channel for farmers to sell their catch and produce straight to consumers’ tables, while consumers can purchase at competitive price points.” said Leo Chow, chief executive officer of Lazada Malaysia.

Selangor State Executive Council Member, Yang Berhormat Tuan Ir Izham Bin Hashim, who is also Chairman of the Standing Committee on Infrastructure and Public Facilities, Modernization of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, said: “The pandemic has brought into high relief the strategic importance of agriculture to our nation’s food security. It is critical for the agricultural industry to adapt to the ‘new normal’ in order to bounce back and recover from the toll and impact on our farmers and SMEs. We commend Lazada’s sense of civic responsibility in helping small local agricultural players. We are confident this will further spur the digital transformation of the agricultural sector which would be beneficial to our nation’s economic recovery from this global pandemic.”

In March, Lazada helped farmers from Cameron Highlands start their eCommerce journey, by selling fresh vegetables that would have been dumped due to supply chain issues during the Movement Control Order period.

The quick onboarding of prawn farmers is made possible in collaboration with GoGet for delivery solutions. Leveraging on the collective efforts with GoGet that spell ‘Kita Tolong Kita’ community, as well as its expertise in technology and logistics, Lazada looks to continue this digital momentum to support local agricultural sellers.

During the highly anticipated 7.7 Mid-Year Super Sale, the freshest shrimps will be going at 30% discount for RM38.20 per box with a min purchase of 5 boxes. The first 800 customers will also be able to enjoy an exclusive limited time 50% off offer with purchase of 8 boxes during the sale
