First major shopping mall in Melawati area to open in 2Q 2017

July 30, 2016 by StrawberrY Gal

The excitement level in the Melawati area has been pushed up a notch as 11 well-known brands were announced today as anchors and key tenants at the upcoming Melawati Mall – the first major shopping mall in the established and affluent residential district of Taman Melawati, located north east of Kuala Lumpur.

In a ceremony attended by about 200 guests, Toys “R” Us, Village Grocer premium supermarket, Golden Screen Cinemas, Fitness First, MPH bookstore, Padini Concept and Brands Outlets fashion stores, SenQ electrical and electronics goods store, Daiso variety store, Kidz Zone children’s playland and Lifestyle Foodcourt were the 11 brands announced as anchors and key tenants, among those that will be opening in Melawati Mall. Living up to the mall’s tagline ‘City shopping at your doorstep’, these household names, alongside other local and international brands, will be bringing the excitement of city shopping to some 740,000 residents in Melawati and surrounding neighbourhoods when the mall becomes operational in the second quarter of next year.

Mr Keith Low, General Manager of Sime Darby CapitaLand (Melawati Mall) Sdn. Bhd., the joint  venture by Sime Darby Property and CapitaLand Mall Asia developing the mall, said: “We are pleased to announce these 11 brands today as our anchors and key tenants, among more than 100 retailers who will be leasing about 60% of Melawati Mall’s net lettable area. This comes several months ahead of our mall’s targeted opening in the second quarter of next year, and we continue to be in active discussions to bring more retailers to our mall.”

“As the first major shopping mall in Taman Melawati and its surrounding neighbourhoods, Melawati Mall will enhance the overall attractiveness of the area as a place to live and shop at when we open. Together with our tenants and the additional retailers that we will be bringing into our mall, we will be meeting the under-served retail needs and aspirations of the residents in this area, transforming their lifestyles in the process. We look forward to welcoming shoppers in the second quarter of next year!”

Fitness First Malaysia Managing Director, Mr Kurt Stocks, said: “We are pleased to once again be partnering with one of the most reputable mall managers in the region – CapitaLand Mall Asia. Melawati Mall is a perfect fit with our ongoing expansion strategy within select high quality developments, enabling us to provide world class and innovative health and fitness clubs for the local communities.”

Mr K.C. Lim, Chief Operating Officer of SenQ, said: “Besides the high visibility and straightforward road access, Melawati Mall also benefits from the strong population catchment and is well designed with a practical layout. In addition to the list of reputable tenants and support from an experienced mall operator, we believe it to be a good combination for success and look forward to a prosperous business collaboration.”

Optimally sized and uniquely positioned for this neighbourhood, Melawati Mall is targeting middle and upper-middle income families, working professionals, residents in the vicinity and students from nearby schools. The 13-storey mall has about 620,000 square feet of net lettable area, with more than 250 retail shops spread over eight levels of retail.

The retail floors are located between two levels of basement carpark and three levels of upper floor carpark with a total of 1,900 parking bays, including “ladies only” and hybrid car priority bays – both of which are nearer to the carpark lift lobbies. To ensure shoppers can move easily between retail zones, the family-friendly mall is equipped with three sets of escalators per floor and eight passenger lifts.

Melawati Mall is set to enhance the attractiveness of the 1,200-acre Melawati township – a  cluster of precincts that includes Taman Melawati, Wangsa Melawati and Desa Melawati. It also encompasses Taman Melati, Wangsa Maju, Taman Permata and Kemensah Heights in the vicinity. Adding to the mall’s catchment, the township is also close to popular tourist destinations such as Batu Caves, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman and the International Islamic University Malaysia. The International School of Kuala Lumpur campuses are also situated close by at Taman Melawati and Ampang.

Melawati Mall is well served by major highways including the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2), Damansara-Ulu Klang Expressway (DUKE) and Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH), and is a mere 20-minute drive from the heart of the city.
