MALAYSIA’S ONLY OPEN-AIR SWING DANCING EVENT IS BACK!

April 19, 2016 by StrawberrY Gal

For the 9th time, LindyKL, a Swing dancing community will be hosting the Swing Out at Publika on Saturday, 23 April 2016 at 7:00pm at The Square @ Publika, Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur! Now an annual affair, Swing Out At Publika – also known as SOAP – was first introduced by LindyKL and remain the only open-air Swing dancing event in Malaysia.

Guests without any dance experience are more than welcome at SOAP as there will be a 30-minute introductory class for newbies to get a taste of the basics. Staples at SOAP include exciting performances, toe-tapping music, vintage-inspired attire and a vibrant atmosphere. However, participants for this year’s event will be in for a treat with live music throughout the night played by the famous Gypsy band, Douche Manouche!

Consisting of Mathilde, Mike, Robert, Jon and Zu, this jazz band aspires to spread the spirit of gypsy jazz throughout Malaysia. Founded in 2013 when their paths crossed by chance, they have been sought out and booked to perform their repertoire of swing tunes from the ‘30s and ‘40s.

Mark your calendars and come join the fun on 23rd April 2016 at The Square @ Publika starting at 7:00pm! To fully enjoy this goofy art form, wear comfortable flats and don your best vintage attire!

LindyKL – Spreading the Joy of Swing Dancing
Founded by Lionel Tan and Joanne Khoo in 2011, LindyKL is a volunteer-run community based in Kuala Lumpur, with the objective of growing the swing dance scene, or more specifically, the Lindy Hop scene in Malaysia. Lindy Hop is a large subset of the swing dance umbrella hailing from Harlem, New York, which originally began as a street dance and was popularized from the 1920s to 1950s.

Today, the Lindy Hop is enjoyed as a partner-dance in more than 50 countries around the world. Major cities such as New York, London, Zurich, as well as some surprising locations – such as Seoul, Ho Chi Minh, Tel Aviv and even Greece – have active dance scenes, some hosting annual swing festivals and weekly social dances.

Four years since it was established, LindyKL now holds beginners’ class almost every month and weekly social dancing in New Star Studio, Taman Desa with an average of 40 dancers showing up every Friday night by 9:00pm that kicks off with a taster class for newcomers. On the social dance floor, none of the dance moves are choreographed hence making the participants of this partner dance rely heavily on body language and communication.
