Senado Square (Largo do Senado) is a public square in Macau. It is located in the central area of the Macau Peninsula. Covering an area of 3,700 square meters (4,425 square yards), this is one of the four largest squares in Macau; the others being Praça do Centro Cultural, Praça do Lago Sai Van and Praça do Tap Seac.
In 2005 it was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List as it forms part of the Historic Centre of Macau. It is one of the icon in Macau and understand that square is so named as since Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) it has been in front of the Leal Senado Building. Vast majority of the buildings around the square are European styled and many are protected monuments.
The square used to allow traffic and parking lots were present,with increasing number of tourists the entire area was covered by Portuguese pavement in the early 1990s and designated a pedestrian-only zone. And now the place had become one of the places for shopping too 🙂
