TOKYO STREET TOASTS TO FOUR SPLENDID YEARS

July 31, 2015 by StrawberrY Gal

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur’s Japanese themed precinct celebrated its anniversary with a first in Malaysia appearance by Chibi Maruko Chan

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s premier shopping destination, kick-started the 4th anniversary celebration of its Japanese themed precinct, Tokyo Street today. The event saw the first ever appearance of popular Japanese icon – Chibi Maruko Chan in Malaysia.  Chibi Maruko Chan is a well-known Japanese manga and television series that depicts the everyday life of a young girl, promoting friendship and family ties.

With an energetic Wadaiko drum performance that ignited the celebratory spirit and set the tone for the day, the event was officially launched by Puan Sri Cindy Lim, Deputy Chairman of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and His Excellency Makio Miyagawa, Ambassador of Japan. In an ode to Japanese tradition, a sake breaking ceremony known as ‘Kagami Biraki’ was done to symbolise good fortune and celebrations. The celebrations continued as Japanese manga icon – Chibi Maruko Chan appeared to greet the excitable audience and partake in a cake-cutting ceremony.

Patrons of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur were invited to dance along during the ‘Summer Dance Performance’ also deemed as the ‘Happy Dance’ by the Japanese. It was a colourful sight as shoppers were seen doing the ‘Happy Dance’ alongside dancers who were dressed in intricately designed kimonos and yukatas. Shoppers and guests were also seen immersing themselves in the Matsuri Summer Fair at the Bukit Bintang entrance that had game booths featuring Japanese stacking, ring toss, boxing and a hammer game. The crowd then adjourned to Tokyo Street for first in Malaysia ‘Chibi Maruko Chan Land’ where Japanese games such as – wanage, superball fishing and yoyo fishing are available.

Ms Joyce Yap, Chief Executive Officer of Retail at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur said, “In just four years, Tokyo Street has established itself as the destination of choice for all things Japanese. We have constantly strived to give our patrons an unforgettable experience, and this anniversary it is with famous Japanese icon, Chibi Maruko Chan.  It has always been our aim for Tokyo Street to be at the core of community activities and cultural exchange. We want to thank the Japan Embassy, key organisations, NGOs, tenants and loyal shoppers for their continued support in fostering community and creating an authentic Japanese experience to all.”

The Tokyo Street 4th Anniversary celebration runs from 29th July to 9th August. Throughout this period, visitors can visit Tokyo Street to enjoy authentic Japanese games and food. Attractive prizes from Tokyo Street are to be won with RM150 spent at Tokyo Street or RM300 spent at specialty stores.
