ACCORHOTELS GROUP INVOLVED IN BEACH CLEAN UP FOR WORLD OCEANS DAY

July 22, 2015 by StrawberrY Gal

Jointly organised with the Rotary Club of Metro Kuala Lumpur, Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside planned a trip to Port Dickson to clean up the beach just outside the Port Dickson Royal Yacht Club in conjunction with World Oceans Day.

Held every June 8th, World Oceans Day is the United Nations-recognized day of ocean celebration and action. The theme this year is aimed at reducing the use of plastic bags which will in turn reduce the amount of plastic trash in our seas.

A group of about 100 children from SRKT Ladang Kerling and Refugee Camp in Sentul were invited on the trip by the Rotary Club of Metro Kuala Lumpur together with about 20 hotel staff from the Accorhotels group, such as Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside, Pullman Bangsar KL and Ibis Styles Fraser Business Park. The Rotarians brought them for a visit to the Port Dickson Military Musuem before proceeding  to the PD Royal Yacht Club.

The aim in organizing the beach clean up was to educate and create awareness among the children on preserving the environment. Hotel staff explained about the impact that plastic bags have on the sealife in the ocean where turtles may mistake the plastic bags as jelly fish for food. The Rotary club played a big role in their contribution towards bus transportation for the children, round of games as well as lunch at the yacht club. Both children and adults went in separate groups to pick up trash such as bottle caps, styrofoam, candy wrappers, plastic bags that were found at the beach area. After the clean up, the children were treated to lunch and games courtesy of the generous Rotarians while hotel staff of Pullman Putrajaya and other Accor sister properties distributed goodie bags.
