Snake Temple is one of the places of interest in Penang. Located in Bayan Lepas, this temple is filled with snakes together with the moke of burning incense and a variety of pit vipers. Originally the snakes were said to be rendered inoffensive by the smell of the incenses, but just for good measure, today the resident vipers are devenomed.
Snake Temple is built and dedicated to Chor Soo Kong, a Buddhist priest and healer, and was built in 1850 by one of his grateful patients. You can get your visit there to Snake Temple and enjoy the scenic view of the temple itself.
This festival is held in conjunction of the year of the snake according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar and also the birthday of the “Cheng Chooi Chor Soo” of Snake Temple. The festival aims to promote cultural tourism in Penang and also to educate the younger generation to appreciate and understand Malaysian culture and history.
